Qaddafi is said to have sought a second term following his last-year election as AU chief.

His nomination met strong opposition from the bloc's members who feared his plans for creating a so-called United States of Africa could threaten the sovereignty of their countries.

Mutharika was chosen following a vote on the first day of a summit in Addis Ababa, which aimed to find a solution to the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and Somalia.

Mutharika secured an election victory in May 2009, after winning 66 percent of the vote.
