Somalia in the Queen's Speech Debate 2009

Foreign affairs aspects of the Queen's Speech were debated in the House of Commons on 23 November 2009.

David Miliband took part in a debate in the House of Commons on the foreign affairs aspects of the Queen's Speech 2009, and he stated on Somalia:

"With respect to Africa, in the last year we have seen glimmers of hope in Somalia, with the appointment of President Sharif and the inclusive nature of the Djibouti process. This is important because stability in Somalia will only come through agreement to share power at a clan and regional level, and instability here has severe implications not just for the Horn of Africa but for the rest of the world including the UK.

Piracy is just one aspect of this. The international community has shown unity and resolve in tackling it – just one ship following the route that is protected by EU and other navies and complying with industry agreed best practice has been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden since last December. [Well, all the many seafarers on the other seajacked vessels hopefully can hear this nonsense by the British Bilderberger on shortwave radio.] Safety in the one million square miles of the Somali Basin is however much harder to deliver, as unfortunately has been proved by the kidnap of British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler. The thoughts of the whole House will be with them and those working for their release."
