China calls for cooperation against piracy as IMO opens 26th Assembly

The 26th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) opened on Monday at the IMO Headquarters in London with delegates stressing the needs to strengthen the cooperation and coordination on the move against the piracy on Indian Ocean.

Most of 169 IMO member states attended the opening ceremony of assembly which is held every two years. Chinese Vice Minister of Transportation Xu Zuyuan attended the meeting.

The assembly will review the work carried out by the IMO during the biennial 2008-2009. High on the agendas of the Assembly are: to significantly reduce the emission of air pollutants from ships, the significant efforts made to develop a regulatory regime to address greenhouse gas emissions from ships, to prevent and repress acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships and the successful delivery of IMO's capacity building activities in developing countries.

Speaking on the assembly, many delegates expressed the importance of cooperative move to reduce the piracy of coast off Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden.

Chinese Vice Minister of Transportation Xu Zuyuan said that the Chinese government supports the international action against the piracy off the Somali coast according to the relative international laws and resolution of UN Security Council in bid to preserve the normal maritime transportation and shipping security in area.
