Somalis sea-jack Singapore-flagged container vessel in Indian Ocean

Somali pirates had captured another ship today as the piracy attacks recently increase again, maritime officials say.

Andrew Mwangura, who heads the East Africa Seafarers Assistance Programme in Kenya said the boxship MV KOTA WAJAR was seized 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles early morning today.

"During the early morning of October 15, 2009, a Singapore-flagged container ship, Kota Wajar, was hijacked in the Indian Ocean by pirates, some 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles," EU NAVOR said in a statement issued by its headquarters in Northwood, Britain.

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority confirmed that a Singapore-registered container ship was hijacked Thursday in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia.

The container ship is owned by Pacific International Lines.
The container ship, MV Kota Wajar, which was heading to the Kenyan port of Mombasa from Singapore.has 21 crew members aboard.

Mwangura could not yet establish the nationalities of the crew members, saying Singaporean vessels have crew members from different nationalities.

The 24,637-tonne container ship was seized 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles, LloydsList and Al Jazeera reported.
According to the maritime security centre of the European Union, which has an anti-piracy naval force patrolling the waters affected by Somali piracy, a EU maritime patrol aircraft is currently investigating the situation.

Later EU NAVFOR sources officially confirmed that the location of the attack was reported to be about 550 miles off Somalia and 150 miles north of the Seychelles.

Other sources reported to ECOTERRA Intl. that the attack took place at a location with the coordinates 01°33' South and 054°52' East.
