Unrest in Urumqi - Worst Ethnic Violence in China for Decades

The unrest that erupted in Urumqi on Sunday was the worst reported ethnic violence in China for decades as thousands of Muslim Uighurs, who have long harboured resentment under Chinese rule, took to the streets. Members of China's ethnic Han majority who were targeted in Sunday's riots fought back in Urumqi on Tuesday armed with makeshift weapons and vowing revenge against the Uighurs.

Dutch police arrested 142 people on Monday when protesters began hurling rocks and paving stones at the mission over the deadly riots that erupted a day earlier in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital, leaving over 1,000 injured.

The consular section of the Chinese embassy in The Hague was closed to the public Tuesday, a day after a protest at its doorstep turned violent.

In Germany, according to Qin, two people threw Molotov cocktails on Monday at the Chinese Consulate-General in Munich, slightly damaging the premises.

China called on Germany and the Netherlands to protect Chinese citizens based in the two countries after they were attacked following deadly riots in the Xinjiang region that left 156 dead.

"China has made solemn representations to the Netherlands and Germany," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters at a regular briefing on Tuesday.
