MV CHARELLE steaming Further South on Somali Indian Ocean Coast

MV CHARELLE is steaming further south on the Somali Indian Ocean Coast in heavy seas. The vessel has been observed being met north of Eyl by one of the other sea-jacked ships from the Garacad area (most likely the Taiwan fishing vessel WINFAR 161) and the very rough weather and sea seem to provide a problem to the small cargo vessel.

It is assumed that the sea-jacked cargo ship is being commandeered also to the central Somali coast and not to Puntland's Eyl, where a coastguard ship is holding out.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said yesterday that it was doing its utmost to secure the safe release of the seven Lankans on board the ‘Charelle’ the New Zealand managed ship that was seized by Somali pirates off the coast of Oman recently. “Our missions in Canberra and Nairobi are doing their utmost to secure their release, we have received information that there are a number of Sri Lankans on board,” Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said.

The Charelle was flying an Antiguan & Barbuda flag at the time it was seized by armed gunmen. The Managing Director of Telex New Land, Victor Peries told the Daily Mirror that GRANDEX New Zealand - the owner-managers of the ship - would negotiate with the abductors.
