Naheed Nenshi, 38, was elected the mayor of Calgary Monday night, October 18, 2010. Nenshi is the first Muslim to hold the top political office in Canada’s third largest city.
Nenshi used Twitter and social media effectively during his campaign. Hundreds of supporters stood out at rallies in their "Purple Revolution" T-shirts, and touted the candidate's fight against what he called a rudderless, misspending city council.
Neshi is the son of immigrants from Tanzania. He was born in Toronto but his family moved to Calgary when he was young. He was educated at Harvard and teaches at Mount Royal University.
Naheed Nenshi is Ismāīli, Ismāīlism is the second largest branch of Shia Islam. The Aga Khan is its spiritual leader.
