FREED MV NAVIOS APOLLON SAILS TO OMAN

EU NAVFOR confirmed on Sunday the report that the Greek owned Panama-flagged Bulk Carrier MV NAVIOS APOLLON hijacked on 28th of December has been released and is heading now north to Salalah, the southern port of the Sultanate of Oman.

The ransom - an unspecified amount - was airdropped onto the vessel on Saturday, a Greek official told the BBC, whose service stated that an international naval force patrolling the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean has been unable to stop attacks on commercial vessels from pirates based in Somalia and the BBC correspondents said the upsurge in piracy in the region is a consequence of the failure to find a solution to Somalia's continuing political disarray. .
EU NAVFOR was not requested for assistance but continues to monitor the situation.

After the last pirate left the vessel yesterday contact was established with a Chinese warship, which since the early morning hours of Sunday did provide relief and escort.
