Canada. Wholesale Services Price Index (WSPI) up

The Wholesale Services Price Index (WSPI) rose 1.3% in the third quarter compared with 4.2% in the second quarter, marking the seventh consecutive quarterly increase.

The third quarter advance of the WSPI was led by a 13.8% increase in margins for wholesalers of petroleum products. Margins for wholesalers of machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.7%), motor vehicles and parts (+1.6%) and personal and household goods (+1.5%) also increased in the third quarter.

The largest margin decreases in the third quarter were posted by wholesalers of farm products (-6.0%) and miscellaneous products (-3.7%). The drop by wholesalers of miscellaneous products was attributable to a 22.8% decline in agricultural supplies.

Year over year, the WSPI increased 6.8% in the third quarter over the same quarter of 2008. The largest year-over-year margin increase was recorded by wholesalers of petroleum products (+28.3%).
