This is the first time Korean forces are in command of a multinational coalition force.

The decision comes largely in part to the Cheonghae unit's successful mission escorting about 1,000 ships and deterring several attacks by Somali pirates.

The Korean Navy has been protecting commercial vessels from pirates in the Gulf of Aden since April 2009.
