Romania confirms one national among crew members hijacked by Somali pirates

Romania’s Embassy to Athens was officially informed by the Greek authorities in connection with the hijacking of Greece-flagged Maran Centaurus carrier by Somali pirates and that among the 28 crew members on board there is also a Romanian citizens, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) confirmed on Monday.

“We have the official confirmation that among the 28 crew members on board there is a Romanian citizen. The crew also includes 16 Filipinos, nine Greek and two Ukrainian citizens”, said MAE. The company the owner of the ship said that the crew health is good and that there is sufficient food, water and medicines on board.
MAE already started the standard procedures so that the sailor’s family is identified and informed by the Ministry of Administration and Interior (MAI). MAE stressed that through Romania’s Embassy to Athens it is monitoring this case and keeps a steady link with the company owner of the seized ship, as well as with the Greek authorities. “We treat this case with maximum attention, with priority on crew members’ integrity”, MAE underlined.

Somali pirates seized on Sunday, in the Indian Ocean, 730 nautical miles off the east coast of Somalia, the Greek crude carrier Maran Centauros with 28 crew members on board, including a Romanian, announced the Greek Ministry for the Citizen’s Protection.
