Seychelles and U.S.A. in joint UAV programme

Unmanned US surveillance planes will be used in the fight against piracy off the Seychelles coast, which has seen a rise in ship hijackings in recent days.

The Government of the Seychelles and the Embassy of the United States announced today the arrival to Seychelles of U.S. unmanned aerial vehicles which will in the near future boost counter-piracy surveillance in the Seychelles and the Western Indian Ocean.

It did not say how many UAVs will be deployed.

The presence of these unmanned aerial vehicles demonstrates the commitment of the United States to improving maritime safety and security in the Western Indian Ocean region and for the people of the Seychelles, a press release stated and promised that in the coming days, one of these vehicles will be shown to the media.
Since the monsoon winds dropped recently, piracy incidents have been on the rise after a relative lull and most of the incidents took place either inside or just outside the Seychelles exclusive economic zone.

The U.S. Africa Command deployes unmanned aerial vehicles in support of Ocean Look — a surveillance and reconnaissance mission aimed at deterring piracy off the Seychelles’ shores.
On Monday Somali Islamist group al-Shebaab claimed to have shot down an UAV over Kisimayo.
