14 held after NZ ship protest

GREENPEACE protesters were removed from a bulker off Tauranga in New Zealand after spending a day chained to parts of the vessel.

They accused NZ dairy giant Fonterra of importing palm kernel animal feed from plantations that have replaced native rainforests in Southeast Asia. But Fonterra later said that it was not the cargo owner and that it imports only small amounts of palm kernel expeller obtained from “sustainable” sources.

The fourteen protesters boarded the Univan-managed, Hong Kong-flag East Ambition (28,378dwt, built 2000) at 0900 NZ time about 2km off Tauranga and attached themselves to the ship’s pilot ladder, anchor and four deck cranes.

Police arrested two protesters after boarding the ship late afternoon but could not arrest the remaining 12 until the ship was brought alongside at about 1800 that day when they were cut loose.

The suspects have been charged with illegally boarding a ship, but NZ’s Federated Farmers called for Greenpeace to be prosecuted for piracy.
