Afghan National Security Forces operate new forward logistics post

LOGAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The Afghan National Security Forces have made improvements in Logar province and with the opening of the Maiwand Forward Logistics Element, the ANSF will be better supplied to conduct military operations.

The FLE, currently serves as a fueling station for the 5th Kandak, Afghan National Army, trucks to stock up on ammunition and pick up ready-to-eat meals. A group of Afghan National Army Soldiers do the work as fuelers, logisticians, medics and truck drivers to keep the new base running smoothly.

Initially, the FLE was set up to assist ANSF during the elections. However, it has proven to be a huge asset to the ANSF, who are working to develop more bases like this and populate them with Afghan personnel.

“The new fuel point is a huge step,” said Army Sgt. Patrick Curtis, a petroleum supply specialist with Company A, 710th Brigade Support Battalion, who helped train ANA soldiers. “With their ability to manage their own logistics, they are one step closer to self-reliancy.”

That self-reliance is something both International Security Assistance Force and ANSF troops are anxious for.

“It is so much easier to be able to fuel our own vehicles,” said Afghan National Army Lt. Col. Abdul Jaber, the 5th Kandak Support Operations commander.

“We initially had some problems getting the fuel point set up at Maiwand,” said Jaber. “The American equipment uses gallons, but all of our equipment measures in liters. But, we’ve worked everything out and it is a great help to have our own fuel point for our trucks to fill up.”

The Maiwand FLE’s newly added fuel point has proven to be such a huge success that more are in the works to assist in other areas.

“We’re also establishing a fuel point for the ANA FLE at FOB Airborne,” said Army Maj. Andrew Dekever, 710th Brigade Support Battalion. “It’s our hope that the fuel point is just the beginning for the Maiwand FLE.”
