Canada appoints New US Ambassador

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed former Manitoba Premier Gary Doer as the next Canadian Ambassador to the United States of America.

“Gary Doer’s accomplished track record of leadership in Manitoba speaks for itself,” said the Prime Minister. “I have always appreciated Premier Doer’s frank and forthright style as well as his tireless efforts to build constructive partnerships among First Ministers. He has the right combination of experience, leadership and diplomatic qualities to serve as Canada’s next Ambassador to the United States.”

Mr. Doer will assume the position of Ambassador following the presentation of his credentials to President Barack Obama.

“After twenty-three years of service to the people of Manitoba, I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge,” said Mr. Doer, who announced yesterday he would be stepping down as Premier. “Canada and the United States have the largest trading relationship in the world, and I will make sure that Canadian interests are heard throughout the U.S. Government.”

Mr. Doer will succeed Michael Wilson, who has served as Canadian Ambassador to the United States since 2006.

“I want personally to thank Ambassador Wilson for his hard work and dedication as Canada's representative in Washington D.C. since 2006,” said the Prime Minister. “His efforts have ensured that Canada is clearly and consistently heard on issues ranging from trade, to security, to the U.S.-Canada border. I thank Ambassador Wilson for his commitment and service to Canada.”

“Premier Doer is a strong advocate for free and open trade,” the Prime Minister added. “This is more important than ever as Canada and the U.S. both work to address the challenges of the global recession.”

Doer resigned as Manitoba's premier on August 27, 2009.
