Israeli Defence Forces Preparing for Larger Logistics Activities

The Israeli Chief of the General Staff spoke at a logistics convention, of the need for continuous logistics efforts in the battle field. On Wednesday (August 19, 2009) the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, said that: "During Operation Cast Lead, the logistic effort worked well, however there is need to prepare for broader activities".

This was said in the logistics convention held in the Golan Heights, in front of hundreds of senior commanders in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), in reserve duty and in compulsory service. There the Chief of the General Staff added that: "One of the main lessons learnt in the Second Lebanon War was the ability given to the division to handle logistical problems. This independence will improve the battling abilities of the combat division."

Amongst the attendees were Head of the Technological and Logistics Directorate, Maj. Gen. Dan Biton and Commander of the GOC Army Headquarters, Maj. Gen. Avi Mizrahi. The convention was intended for the field commander of the Ground Forces alignment, from the rank of battalion commanders and above. In the convention, logistic maneuvers in the battle field, in addition to different aerial, land and sea battle scenarios were displayed. A similar convention was held just a day prior for 900 logistics, ordnance and medicine officers.

Moreover, the necessity of the logistics field in ongoing combat operations, as part of the lessons learnt from the Second Lebanon War and Operation Cast Lead, are already being implemented in missions, training exercises and various drills.

During the day, the commanders visited an exhibition displaying the most advanced technologies, from a logistics perspective for the different combat scenarios such as; supply, medicine, maintenance, computer network, and adjutant and military police field. This displayed the complete logistic supply chain, with the cooperation of Corps and all the divisions.

The exhibition displayed rescue operations, meant to improve live saving methods, treatment of wounded on the ground, fast provision of supplies and methods of evacuating injured people from the battle field.

The Chief of the General Staff concluded the convention by saying: "The importance of the logistic effort is derived from the effort to win by moving the battle to enemy grounds. In order to do that the IDF needs continuous logistics efforts. There is a need to include a professional logistic plan in every operation, not only firing abilities determine the outcome, but maneuvering abilities such as the ones showed here.”
