International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: Tolerance.ca ® Celebrates Diversity

Montréal—To mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Tolerance.ca ®, the Tolerance Webzine, is joining forces with Vanier College, Collège de Saint-Laurent and the University of Sudbury to celebrate the wealth in diversity. Lively presentations, thought-provoking discussions and an exhibition of outstanding images are on the program for March 16 and 21. The events are organized jointly by the staff of the participating institutions and professors who are members of Tolerance.ca ®.

For the third year, Tolerance.ca ® is pleased to contribute to the educational progress of students at Vanier College by encouraging projects that value diverse cultural elements in our society. This year, eight students in the course “Islamic World Views” given by Sevak Manjikian, which examines pluralism in the Muslim world, will receive awards for the quality of the work they present at the panel on Friday, March 16, 2007. Among the subjects covered will be diversity in Montréal, its beneficial effects, the challenges it faces, and the ways it affects the atmosphere in a classroom situation. Around sixty people are expected to attend.

The event will be held on Friday, March 16, 2007, from 10:00 to 11:30 am, in Room N-186, 821 Ste. Croix, Montréal, in the borough of Saint-Laurent.

It will be moderated by professor Sevak Manjikian, a member of Tolerance.ca ®.

Vanier College is an English CEGEP that welcomes students of all backgrounds.

Tolerance.ca ® will also give awards to four students from Collège de Saint-Laurent who take part in the exhibition “En couleurs.” The photos in this exhibition reflect on the theme “Diversity of values and religious beliefs in colleges and universities,” a series published in Tolerance.ca ® 's  On Campus section.

Students will showcase their work in the visual arts, film, photography and poetry on March 21, 2007, in Room B-53, 625 Ste. Croix, Montréal, in the borough of Saint-Laurent. The exhibition will run until March 25, 2007.

Collège de Saint-Laurent is a French-language CEGEP that, like Vanier, has a multi-ethnic student body.  Professor François La Bissonnière, a member of Tolerance.ca ®, teaches literature in its French department.

Discrimination in the University: Causes, Forms and Paths to Solutions

That is the subject to be covered by five students from the University of Sudbury, whose presentations were selected by Tolerance.ca ® to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The students will give their talks as part of a round table moderated by Osée Kamga,  professor in the Communications Department and a member of Tolerance.ca ®.

The event will be held on March 21, 2007, in Salon Émile-Bouvier (Room 250) at the University of Sudbury. The following topics will be covered: What forms of discrimination can be observed on campus? Is it possible to overcome discrimination? What are the paths to solutions?

The Communications Department at the University of Sudbury offers courses in French in journalism and public relations.

The University of Sudbury is a post-secondary educational institution located in Sudbury, Ontario, that is committed to bilingualism.

Tolerance.ca ® will publish reports on all three of these events. For the event held at Collège de Saint-Laurent, please click on Collège de St-Laurent Event,  For the Vanier Event please click on Vanier
