According to unconfirmed sources, the Chief Engineer of the ship and several high ranking officials on board are believed to be Sri Lankans. While Berlin’s foreign ministry did not confirm the abduction, Commander Chris Davies, NATO’s maritime spokesman, re-confirmed:“I can confirm a ship, the MV Charelle, has been hijacked Friday afternoon inside Oman’s territorial waters”.

A Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry official confirming the incident, said they were trying to get in touch with the Lankan mission in Oman and other relevant international institutions to get a better grasp of the situation. “If any Lankans are aboard, the Ministry will seek help to get them released,” he added. Meanwhile, some relatives in Sri Lanka are said to have confirmed that their loved ones were aboard the ill-fated ship. It was reported that none of the crew had been harmed. A merchant ship, the Eli Maersk, first reported and relayed information on the incident.
