Christmas or Chanukah - We Must Respect the Religious Traditions of Everyone, Urges B'nai Brith President

MONTREAL - Whether we celebrate Christmas or Chanukah or the holidays of any other religion, we must respect the religious traditions of everyone,” said Allan Adel, National President of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada. “There is no point in modifying the name of the ‘Christmas tree’, it does not change its powerful symbolism or what it represents to people.

B'nai Brith Canada - Quebec Region has urged Quebeckers to demonstrate their support for the province’s diverse peoples and nationalities by respecting all religious traditions as this holiday season approaches. This call was issued by B’nai Brith in the wake of a debate initiated in Quebec's National Assembly on the use of the term “Holiday tree” as opposed to the traditional “Christmas tree”.

“Quebeckers should be welcome to mark the religious and cultural uniqueness of their holidays, including, for example, Christmas trees in public places, or menorahs being displayed during the Chanukah season. Our goal should be to ensure that all religions have a place in the cultural fabric of Quebec society.”
