Canada Hosts the Third Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Culture of the Organization of American States

Montréal - Canada will host the Third Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Culture and Highest Appropriate Authorities of the Organization of American States from November 13 to 15, 2006 in Montréal, Quebec. The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, will chair the meeting and will deliver a Keynote Address during the Opening Session of the Meeting on November 14.

"Canada's New Government is proud to host this prestigious meeting in the province of Quebec. Through our two-day discussions, we hope to increase awareness and mutual understanding of cultural policy issues in the Americas," said Minister Oda. "Canada intends to use this meeting to engage countries of the Americas on the issue of cultural diversity and to promote the ratification of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions."

Ministers or Highest Appropriate Authorities responsible for culture from the member states of the Organization of American States will discuss issues of common interest with a view to enhancing dialogue and strengthening relationships within the hemisphere.

Four plenary sessions will be held during the meeting and will focus on the presentation and preservation of cultural heritage; cultural policies, education and identity; culture and the creation of jobs and overcoming poverty; and culture and the role of indigenous peoples.

The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the countries of the Western Hemisphere to strengthen cooperation and advance common interests. It is the region's premier forum for multilateral dialogue and concerted action.
