Discrimination Prevention Forum October 27 to 29, 2008 – Building a Workplace Free from Discrimination

Building a workplace free from discrimination is the common goal of participants at the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s (CHRC) 2008 Discrimination Prevention Forum being held in Ottawa from October 27 to 29, 2008. Edmonton and Halifax will also host one-day workshops on October 29, 2008.

“Making an Impact is the theme of the forum and a key priority for us in all the work we do,” said CHRC Chief Commissioner Jennifer Lynch, Q.C. “The theme motivates us to raise complex issues and seek realistic solutions for both employers and employees.” Ms. Lynch delivered the opening address at the forum to over 200 decision makers from government, private sector and non-profit organizations.

During these three days, high profile guest speakers will examine the changing face of the modern workplace. Among them are Ted Childs, diversity expert and former IBM executive; Deborah Katz, Transportation Security Administration Model Workplace Program Executive; Moya Greene, President and CEO of Canada Post; and David Shannon, legal advocate for persons with disabilities.

Accommodation – employers and employees adapting to specific workplace needs – is a major theme of the conference. Workshops will focus on accommodating physical and mental disabilities, marital/family responsibilities and religion.

Representatives from government, private sector and non-profit organizations from across Canada gather at this event to share knowledge and develop tools to prevent discrimination and promote human rights.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission protects and advances human rights by providing a strong, independent and credible voice for promoting equality in Canada.
