Elles forment un petit groupe soudé, quoique parfois rival. Sonia Delaunay, Nina Kandinsky, Nelly van Doesburg, Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss et Lily Klee partagent le statut de veuves, héritières d’artistes dits abstraits. Dans le Paris de l’après-guerre et jusqu’à la fin des années 1970, leurs choix ont joué un rôle primordial dans le passage à la postérité de l’œuvre de leur époux et dans la reconnaissance de l’abstraction. Ces femmes restent pourtant souvent dans l’ombre.
